Pastor Vitale teaches that there are people born empathetic, while others may develop the quality as they grow spiritually. These individuals can pick up other people’s pain. The individual then carries the pain of someone who is either in denial or who has a strong mind that literally forces that pain out, not knowing the pain has been transferred to another person.

The empathetic person absorbs the negative energy and experiences everything the other person is not experiencing. According to Pastor Vitale, such people need to learn how to deal with this energy and be filled with the mind of Christ, as they risk becoming emotionally unstable or mentally ill.
