In the Old Testament, the Lord made a covenant at Sinai with the Jews, and chose the family of Aaron and his tribe, known as the Levites, to serve as priests. This priestly tribe became responsible for serving in the temple and making sacrifices on behalf of the people to atone for their sins.
Melchizedek appeared in the time of Abraham. Known as a priest-king (although he was not of the tribe of Levi), he offered bread and wine to Abraham, who received the tithe of God from him. It is a great mystery, but God pays the tithe of the anointing to the spiritual, inner man of the teaching pastor, and men pay their tithes to the pastor who teaches them. Psalm 110 speaks of there being a priest in the order of Melchizedek.
That priest is Jesus, who was born not of the Levite tribe, but of the tribe of Judah. Paul writes in his letter to the Hebrews that the new high priest will arise from the tribe of Judah, and that this high priest is Jesus, whose priesthood is immortal because he will not die.
