Understanding Heb. 6:4-6

Heb 6:4-6

4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,

5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,

6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.  KJV

Paul is saying that Christ cannot be renewed a second time because if you truly repented (which is witnessed to by a change of nature) the first time, Christ, your new nature, would not have been tempted to sin in that same area again.

So, if you commit the same sin after having understood the Word of God which says that Christ overcame sin and death, and after you experienced the power of God to cast out that sin, it would mean that either God is a liar, and that Jesus did not publicly destroy Satan’s power over you, or you are the liar, and your original repentance was not sincere. You might have thought that it was sincere, but obviously it was not because you did it again.

Wherefore, the Scripture says that we must sorrow (feel bad about that sinful desire) until God grants us true repentance, which changes how we feel about that sin, i.e., we no longer desire it.

So true repentance destroys the desire for the sin. If we have not experienced true repentance in any area, it means that we have not suffered enough from the consequences of that sin for us to hate it enough for God to remove it. Wherefore the Scripture says that when we have sorrowed enough, i.e., when we despise the sin enough, God will remove that desire.

What happened to these believers? Despite the fact that they received the Gospel of the Kingdom in their mind and received deliverance from some of the ungodly fruit in their soul, they still had curses and spiritual powers operating in their lives which brought forth evil fruit at the same time that Christ was present to prevent it from happening. In other words, consciously or unconsciously, they rejected Christ and chose to sin.

Thank you.
